Comparison of Quantitative Ventilation-Perfusion Lung Scan Results Using Different Xenon-133 Ventilation Images

چکیده
Objective: This paper evaluates the influence of the specific Xe ventilation images used to calculate differential function in quantitative ventilation-perfusion lung scans. Methods: Whole-lung differentials were determined on 43 Xe ventilationfl mTc-macroaggregated albumin perfusion studies. Ventilation calculations were performed for the firstbreath, up to three equilibrium and the composite of all equilibrium images, and perfusion calculations were performed for the anterior and posterior images and their geometric mean. Differences of :::5% between comparable images were considered significant. Results: The first-breath ventilation differential differed from at least one equilibrium view in 13 patients {30%) and from the composite of all equilibrium images in seven patients {16%), while the posterior perfusion differential differed from the anterior differential in 15 patients {35%) and from the geometric mean differential in six patients {14%). By comparison, the posterior or geometric mean perfusion differential differed from either the first-breath or composite ventilation differential in 31 patients {72%). Nine patients {21 %) had ventilation/perfusion discrepancies =::10%, with ventilation differentials more symmetric in seven patients. Conclusion: The choice of Xe ventilation image has only a limited effect on differential calculations. Discrepancies are more frequent between ventilation and perfusion differentials, making it important to determine both, particularly in patients with asymmetric lung disease.

Spurious lung perfusion ventilation defect on planar ventilation-perfusion scan detected by SPECT imaging
Pulmonary embolism (PE) is a preventable cause of morbidity and mortality which needs prompt recognition. Ventilation-perfusion (V/Q) scan is a well-established diagnostic test for evaluation of suspected PE. We report a 32-year-old woman with history of rheumatologic disease and acute dyspnea, who was referred for V/Q scintigraphy. The planar images revealed multiple mismatched defects through...

BACKGROUND Quantification of particle deposition in the lung by gamma scintigraphy requires a reference image for location of regions of interest (ROIs) and normalization to lung thickness. In various laboratories, the reference image is made by a transmission scan ((57)Co or (99m)Tc) or gas ventilation scan ((133)Xe or (81)Kr). There has not been a direct comparison of measures from the two me...
متن کاملComparison of Xe-133 washout and single-breath imaging for the detection of ventilation abnormalities.
The Xe-133 ventilation studies of 115 patients were analyzed to determine the relative abilities of the single-breath and washout phases to detect regional ventilation abnormalities. All Xe-133 images were obtained in the posterior projection before 6-view perfusion studies with Tc-99m human albumin microspheres. There were 275 regions with matching V-P abnormalities in the patients. The washou...

Krypton-81m and Xe-133 ventilation scintigrams, and particulate per fusion scintigrams with Tc-99m, were obtained on the same day in 41 pa tients. Of 14 studies demonstrating pulmonary embolism, Kr-81m corn plernented the perfusion study better than Xe-133 in seven and was judged essential for that diagnosis in two. Xenon-133 was better in none. On the other hand, in 29 studies with obstructive...

Xenon-133 and xenon-127 were compared by performing ventilation studies with both radionuclides in 19 patients with a variety of lung diseases. Assessment of the counting rate over the chest, relative to the radioactivity in the lungs, permitted the evaluation of each isotope in terms of usable photons detected by a scintillation camera with a large field of view and appropriate collimation.
